Ever thought about how the pH affects our bodies? Really what’s the deal with pH in the body? I never really thought about it until I became unwell. While researching different things to see what could be affecting my body and what I could do myself. I came across some articles about the balance of pH in our bodies and how it affects our well being. Naturally I wanted to have mine tested and see which way my body was leaning. It was important to see if I needed to be rebalanced.
So what is the pH of our body? Our bodies are made up of 70% water. The body has an acid-alkaline ratio called pH (potential of hydrogen) which is a balance between positive ions (acid forming) and negative ions (alkaline forming). Our bodies are continually trying to find balance in the pH. During times of imbalance, however, body systems can become weakened and these weaknesses may manifest themselves outwardly.
For a healthy body our pH levels should be around 6.4-6.5. When it is in this level the body functions at it’s best. When the balance changes and there is too much acid in the body viruses tend to thrive. I have read that most people who have an unbalanced pH are what is called “acidic”. When one is acidic it depletes the body of calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium and can damage vital organs and bones. Some people who are acidic may notice things like weight gain, immune deficiency, joint pain, low energy, brittle bones, hip fractures, weakened heart, bladder or kidney concerns and even acceleration of free radical damage.
So how do acid and alkaline levels affect the body
Some people have a high alkalinity in the body. Those with high alkalinity tend to notice more things like respiratory problems such as asthma and shortness of breath, immune system concerns, urinary weakness, digestive or intestinal problems like poor elimination and even nervous system exhaustion.
As an acidic level increases it is more difficult for the body to excrete the acid. It must either store it in the tissues of the body or buffer it by borrowing minerals from organs, bones, etc. to neutralize any acid. Sounds like this could be painful.
https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Magnesium-HealthProfessional/The body tries to manage acid by excreting it through the colon, kidneys, lungs and skin. It also tries buffering it by way of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. Or it stores it in the tissues, joints, muscles and arteries.
If our bodies pH is out of balance then it will not be able to property absorb and process minerals and nutrients i.e. vitamins and supplements you take. So you are basically throwing your money out the window taking these products if your body is not able to assimilate them.
Some of the foods that are more alkaline include lemons, grapefruit, onions, raw spinach, green tea and millet.
Some of the foods that are more acidic include blueberries, pecans, wheat, beef and coffee.
It is easy to determine what your pH is through a qualified practitioner. See a qualified practitioner to help you determine what your next steps are to achieve a healthier body.
The information above is solely my opinion from which I have researched and information I received from my practitioner. Be sure to do your research to learn more about your bodies pH.
