So, you may be wondering. Where are some places that gluten can be found? Of course when you are newly diagnosed your doctor advises you to avoid things like bread, crackers, pasta and cereal but did you know that you also need to be searching in other products? You need to become a master detective when reading labels. It is definitely worth the extra time reading a label because lets face it, none of us want to end up in the bathroom and feeling horrible for days. Ugh!
Yes, it can be a little intimidating but here you will find a guide on a few things to review. You need to think outside the box. It is a good idea to look at the things you drink and put on your body which are covered below.
Especially important if you have children be aware of Play-Doh as it contains wheat. I was surprised to find this out and never even thought about looking at something the children play with. This can easily to be transferred from the hands to the mouth. My granddaughter really wanted Play-Doh but it’s not at my house.

- Dairy Substitutes
- Deli Meats
- Fried Foods
- Gravies
- Hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) and Hydrolyzed plant protein (HPP) – these are found in many “fake” meats
- Imitation Seafood
- Licorice
- Marinades
- Salad Dressing
- Seasoning & Spices
- Soy sauce
- Soup bases
Beauty products:
- Hairsprays
- Lip Gloss
- Lip Stick
- Makeup
- Skin Moisturizes
Other places to find gluten:
- Envelopes and their adhesive – Don’t Lick the Envelopes
- Play-Doh
- Prescription and over the counter drugs
- Vitamins & Supplements
Be wary of the following:
- Additives
- Artificial color
- Brewer’s yeast
- Emulsifiers
- Filler
- Germ glucose syrup
- Grain alcohol
- Groats
- Hydrogenated oils
- Malt
- Modified food starch, Natural flavors, flavors, softener
While this is a good starting point there are other areas to be on the look out for gluten. You will find additional information on this as we go along in our journey. It’s time to begin your detective work.
In summary if you include mostly non-processed foods, eating fresh, single ingredient items you will be in a much better position health wise.
